STROBILE

Strob"ile, n. Etym: [L. strobilus a pine cone, Gr. strobole.] [Written also strobil.]

1. (Bot.)

Definition: A scaly multiple fruit resulting from the ripening of an ament in certain plants, as the hop or pine; a cone. See Cone, n., 3.

2. (Biol.)

Definition: An individual asexually producing sexual individuals differing from itself also in other respects, as the tapeworm, -- one of the forms that occur in metagenesis.

3. (Zoöl.)

Definition: Same as Strobila.
